1. Introducing MicroStation Mac
MicroStation Mac is a new 2D/3D CADD package from Intergraph Corporation, the world's largest company dedicated to developing and manufacturing interactive computer graphics systems. MicroStation Mac exemplifies the most complete functionality of any CADD package available for the Macintosh today. More than 450 viewing and drawing functions are supported. This demonstration version provides you with a hands-on look at MicroStation Mac's powerful features to assist you in selecting the package for your design needs.
Among the features of MicroStation Mac are
• True 3D graphics
• Implementation of the Apple Desktop Interface for ease of use
• Display of up to eight separate views, all simultaneously active for both input and output
• Support for the attachment of up to 32 files for reference, in read-only mode
• Concurrent display of wireframe, shaded, and hidden line displays of the same object in the same view
• Multiple undo/redo
• Database interface to Oracle for linking non-graphical data to graphic elements
• Support for 16 million colors with Apple's 32-Bit Color QuickDraw
• Translation-free compatibility with MicroStation PC and IGDS (Intergraphs's VAX-based core graphics software).
2. System Requirements
• Macintosh II, IIx, IIci, IIcx, or SE/30
• Minimum 2MB RAM (at least 4MB are recommended)
• One or more display adapters (Apple or third-party), one per monitor
• A hard disk drive
• Macintosh System Tools software, version 6.0.2, or later
We recommend the use of two or more screens or a 19" or larger screen.
3. Installing MicroStation Mac on the Hard Disk
The software and example files are distributed on three diskettes.
To perform installation:
a. At the desktop (Finder or MultiFinder), create and name a new folder for installing MicroStation. This is referred to as "the MicroStation folder", so you might want to name the folder “MicroStation (Demo)” or “uStation (Demo)”.
b. Insert the diskette labeled “System Disk 1” into the floppy disk drive.
The diskette opens on the desktop.
c. Open the MicroStation Installer application (either double-click its icon or select the icon and choose Open from the File menu).
The MicroStation Installer application displays a welcome screen followed by the standard Open dialog box.
d. Select the MicroStation folder you created, and click the Install button.
Another dialog box is displayed for you to select full or partial installation. It is recommended that you initially install the entire demonstration package (about 4MB).
e. Click the Install button.
The MicroStation application and several folders are automatically copied from the distribution diskettes to the MicroStation folder on the hard disk. A window displays installation status at all times. Periodically, MicroStation Installer requests you to remove one diskette and insert another. If you need to abort installation at any time, click the Cancel button.
f. When installation is complete, MicroStation Installer displays an alert box. The message in this box does not apply to the demonstration version, so just click OK to return to the desktop.
4. Running MicroStation Mac
To start MicroStation Mac, select the MicroStation (Demo) icon on the desktop and choose Open from the File menu or simply double-click the icon. After the start-up screen is displayed, the Open Design File dialog box opens for you to select a design file. A design file is simply a MicroStation document.
After you select and open a design file, you will see the graphics display. This is the MicroStation Mac drawing environment. Viewing and drawing commands are activated from tool palettes or by keying in the Command Window. This demonstration version runs for 10 minutes at a time and reminds you to save any design file changes before it quits.
The following features of MicroStation Mac are NOT part of this demonstration version: plotting, printing, User Commands (macros), digitizing tablet support, Oracle database interface, patterning, and DXF file translation.
5. Park Scene Tutorial
This demonstration package includes the Park Scene Tutorial, a HyperCard-like introduction to MicroStation Mac, which runs along with MicroStation. There is a Read Me First document for this tutorial in the Park Scene sub-folder within the MicroStation folder.
The tutorial runs in MicroStation's Help window, so on-line help is not available while the tutorial is running.
6. On-Line Help
To access MicroStation's HyperCard-like system of on-line help:
• press <command-?>, or
• (on an Extended Keyboard) press the <help> key.
Once on-line help is started, it displays a help screen for each command that you activate. If there is no help screen for a particular command, the first screen in the Table of Commands is displayed.
Two arrows are located at the bottom center of each help screen: Clicking the left arrow displays the previous screen, and clicking the right arrow displays the next screen (the screens are arranged in alphabetical order, with the Table of Commands in front of the help screens).
The Commands button takes you to the first screen in the Table of Commands. There, clicking on a command displays the help screen for that command.
The Recent button takes you to the last help screen that was displayed.
To turn off the on-line help system, click the Help window's close box.
There is a minor problem with the on-line help system:
If the Help window is "sunk" beneath a view (the Sink tool on the right end of its title bar was clicked), and a portion of the help text is obscured, scrolling does not update the covered text. If the window is brought to the front, the old text is displayed in the portions that were covered with illegible results. If this occurs, move to a different help screen, click the Recent button to move back, and then scroll when the entire text box is visible.
